&#8211; Crocodiles, &#8220;Sleep Forever&#8221;<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>See that point where the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/K-index\" target=\"_blank\">K index<\/a> plummets from a tasty 7, indicating a geomagnetic storm, to a serene 4, indicating bubkes?\u00a0 That&#8217;s the point where a friend and I loaded up the truck and blazed north to catch those auroras that we&#8217;ve been anticipating.\u00a0 That&#8217;s okay&#8230;my photo buddy and I had a backup plan, and it worked out quite nicely.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bismarck-mandan.com\/images\/2014\/09\/lake_mitchell_dock_31837.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4173\" little lake northeast of town.\u00a0 Even though the auroras weren&#8217;t cooperating, the moon and sky sure were.\u00a0 There was a fantastic lunar corona which actually manifested as a couple of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atoptics.co.uk\/halo\/parmoon.htm\" target=\"_blank\">paraselenae, or moondogs <\/a>as the sky conditions mutated.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bismarck-mandan.com\/images\/2014\/09\/lake_mitchell_dock_31841.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4172\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bismarck-mandan.com\/images\/2014\/09\/lake_mitchell_dock_31841.jpg\" alt=\"lake_mitchell_dock_31841\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2014\/09\/lake_mitchell_dock_31841.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2014\/09\/lake_mitchell_dock_31841-150x99.jpg 150w, bit, allowing the sky to do some things and letting long exposures turn the rippling lake to glass.\u00a0 At this point we were still hopeful for some auroral activity, but moved on to the next stage in our backup plan since it didn&#8217;t require Northern Lights to bear fruit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bismarck-mandan.com\/images\/2014\/09\/arena_church_31845.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4168\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bismarck-mandan.com\/images\/2014\/09\/arena_church_31845.jpg\" alt=\"arena_church_31845\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2014\/09\/arena_church_31845.jpg 500w, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>This is the abandoned church at Arena.\u00a0 It looks like daylight, even though it was around midnight or so, because the full moon was a-blazin&#8217;.\u00a0 I grabbed my big 6-D-Cell Maglite and did some light painting of the cross atop the church&#8217;s steeple, and we let the stars and clouds do their thing in the background.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bismarck-mandan.com\/images\/2014\/09\/arena_church_31851.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4176\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bismarck-mandan.com\/images\/2014\/09\/arena_church_31851.jpg\" alt=\"arena_church_31851\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2014\/09\/arena_church_31851.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2014\/09\/arena_church_31851-99x150.jpg 99w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2014\/09\/arena_church_31851-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a>In this shot it almost looked like I could see some splashes of color in the clouds, as if the auroras were trying to peek through, but even at full size I wasn&#8217;t able to tell definitively.\u00a0 It was cool to be able to visit this ghost town in the dark, though, and it was another excellent consolation prize since the Northern Lights trip was otherwise a bust.<\/p>\n<p>I have the attitude that any time I return from a photo trip with even <em>one<\/em> image that I really like, that trip has been a success.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t even matter if the photo is relevant to the purpose of the trip.\u00a0 In this case, I have a few such photos, and they were the result of a solid backup plan, so I&#8217;m pleased not only with the results we captured but the success of that
