{"id":4185,"date":"2014-09-23T07:31:30","date_gmt":"2014-09-23T12:31:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bismarck-mandan.com\/?p=4185"},"modified":"2014-09-23T07:32:06","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T12:32:06","slug":"i-hate-to-say-i-told-you-so-but","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/?p=4185","title":{"rendered":"I hate to say &#8220;I told you so&#8221;, but&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bismarck-mandan.com\/images\/2014\/09\/frontier_logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4186\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bismarck-mandan.com\/images\/2014\/09\/frontier_logo.jpg\" alt=\"frontier_logo\" width=\"500\" height=\"111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2014\/09\/frontier_logo.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2014\/09\/frontier_logo-150x33.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two years ago I posted an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bismarck-mandan.com\/?p=3135\">April Fool&#8217;s post<\/a> in which I claimed that United Airlines would be discontinuing service to Bismarck-Mandan because a new competitor, Frontier Airlines, was going to be receiving subsidies to come and compete with them.\u00a0 Apparently it was an entirely plausible idea, because a lot of people bought it.\u00a0 Gotcha.\u00a0 Well, it turns out that my satirical post was prescient in at least one way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bismarck-mandan.com\/?p=3135\">In the last paragraph of the post<\/a>, I pointed out that the same thing happened in Fargo, where Frontier operated for the same two years, then left despite the incentives that city had provided:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ironically, Frontier Airlines pulled out of Fargo in 2010 after only two years of being \u201ctouted as a low-cost carrier that would bring down fares at Fargo\u2019s Hector International Airport\u201d (Associated Press, 2\/5\/10). Flaweigh surmised, \u201cOnce that happens in Bismarck, maybe the City of Bismarck will consider offering United a \u2018break-even guarantee\u2019 and some other concessions as they are currently offering our competitors.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here we are, two years later, and Frontier is doing the two-year two-step. I guess any consternation at throwing $250,000 and other incentives at them doesn&#8217;t seem so unreasonable after all.
