The coolest thing about the ice was the lines where it had melted and frozen. The photo above kinda shows some thick &#8220;veins&#8221; running down the slab.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4478\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33001.jpg\" alt=\"river_ice_33001\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33001.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33001-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33001-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>In the shade, and with a little off-camera flash, you can see a couple of sets of striation lines in this ice.\u00a0 Some run vertically, probably from melting, and others run horizontally, most likely as the slab froze thicker and thicker. But something else about this feature caught my eye.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33117.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33117.jpg\" alt=\"river_ice_33117\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33117.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33117-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33117-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a>My boys think this looks like some sort of sci-fi sword. Maybe it looks like a shark fin to some. I was just glad to find some sort of neat looking protrusion that wasn&#8217;t discolored by river sand. I decided to play some angles and experiment with off-camera flash while the lighting did various things.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33173.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4475\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33173.jpg\" alt=\"river_ice_33173\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33173.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33173-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33173-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a>Looks like a sculpture, doesn&#8217;t it?\u00a0 Maybe a golf trophy or something.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33156.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4474\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33156.jpg\" alt=\"river_ice_33156\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33156.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33156-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33156-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a>The brilliant blue sky turned to gray and even a little purple at times (we dudes don&#8217;t know terms like &#8220;lavender&#8221; or &#8220;periwinkle&#8221;.\u00a0 With that, the reflectivity of the ice changed (along with the color of the slab).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33161.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33161.jpg\" alt=\"river_ice_33161\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33161.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33161-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33161-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>Here you can see the lines of the slab. It looks like a chandelier &#8211; a five hundred pound one, at that.\u00a0 I tried time and time again to do them justice, but I simply could not.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33131.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4471\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33131.jpg\" alt=\"river_ice_33131\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33131.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33131-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33131-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a>I feel like I won a Longest Drive contest or something!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33086.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4479\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33086.jpg\" alt=\"river_ice_33086\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33086.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33086-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2015\/03\/river_ice_33086-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a>And then the blue skies came back.\u00a0 We sauntered up river a little ways to start pointing the cameras at some gnarly trees or something, and it&#8217;s a good thing we did. The standing water atop the ice was encroaching upon our position, meaning that things were starting to melt.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not one to take a lot of chances on river ice. Even though the slab we were on was incredibly thick, I wasn&#8217;t about to let my guard down.<\/p>\n<p>Soon there won&#8217;t be any river ice to photograph.
