sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>I recently took a road trip to Arena, the nearest photogenic &#8220;ghost town&#8221; near Bismarck, to spend some time with one of my favorite subjects: the abandoned St. John&#8217;s Lutheran church, one of only a few structures still standing<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37089.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5004\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37089-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"arena_church_37089\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37089.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37089-150x100.jpg 150w, so good these days.\u00a0 The cinder block foundation has collapsed on both the east and west sides of the building, and the building itself is beginning to collapse as a result.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37090.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5005\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37090-333x500.jpg\" alt=\"arena_church_37090\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" like this is to avoid tampering with it, damaging it, or (in most cases) entering it.\u00a0 Someone else didn&#8217;t show the same restraint, tearing off one of the wooden covers over a window toward the front of the church.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37135-7_hdr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4998\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37135-7_hdr-333x500.jpg\" alt=\"arena_church_37135-7_hdr\" width=\"333\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5006\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37092-333x500.jpg\" (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a>Here&#8217;s the west wall of the foundation.\u00a0 Not only have the cinder blocks caved in, but so has a lot of the dirt along the foundation wall itself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37132.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4999\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37132-333x500.jpg\" alt=\"arena_church_37132\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" the first side to cave in, although a portion of it is intact.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37119.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5002\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37119-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"arena_church_37119\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37119.jpg 500w, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>Peeking under the church, one can assess the damage.\u00a0 Nothing is holding this church from folding in half except a few pillars downstairs&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37313.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4997\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37313-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"arena_church_37313\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37313.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37313-150x100.jpg 150w, has crumbled as well.\u00a0 Craters around the bottoms of these pillars illustrate how, with the cinder block walls absent, they bear the entire weight of the structure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37126-8_hdr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5001\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37126-8_hdr-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"arena_church_37126-8_hdr\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" windows and an old stove sit in the corner next to the steps leading downstairs.\u00a0 I got all these basement photos by lying on my stomach next to the collapsed wall; as I mentioned before, i didn&#8217;t want to enter the building.\u00a0 In fact, while it&#8217;s gone now, there was a No Trespassing sign on the front of the church long ago.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37274-5_hdr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5007\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37274-5_hdr-500x332.jpg\" alt=\"arena_church_37274-5_hdr\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37270.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37270-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"arena_church_37270\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" decided to see what was inside the church.\u00a0 I put my camera on a monopod with a remote and a flash, stood outside the window, and poked it inside with a wide angle lens.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what my camera saw.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37304-6_hdr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5008\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_37304-6_hdr-333x500.jpg\" alt=\"arena_church_37304-6_hdr\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" bad, because I really had to pee by the time I was wrapping up here.\u00a0 Thankfully a friend lives nearby, and I was able to stop at their place right after leaving &#8220;town&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_church_DJI_00131.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter down.\u00a0 It&#8217;s sad to see the inevitable happen to this little church.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve photographed it on cloudy days, sunny days, starry nights, and with the faint glow of the Northern Lights behind it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s such a picturesque little church, in such a scenic location, and so accessible to sentimental photography hobbyists like me.\u00a0 I guess all I can do is make an
