{"id":5088,"date":"2016-06-13T00:54:12","date_gmt":"2016-06-13T05:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/?p=5088"},"modified":"2016-06-13T07:21:02","modified_gmt":"2016-06-13T12:21:02","slug":"cold-war-mancation-part-seven-mission-completed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/?p=5088","title":{"rendered":"Cold War Mancation, Part Seven: Mission completed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/cavalier_38305-7_hdr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5085\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/cavalier_38305-7_hdr-333x500.jpg\" alt=\"cavalier_38305-7_hdr\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/cavalier_38305-7_hdr.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/cavalier_38305-7_hdr-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/cavalier_38305-7_hdr-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a>This weekend I finished the last thing on my list as far as my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/?s=cold+war+mancation&amp;submit=Search\">Cold War Mancation series<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;d visited many military and historic sites around North Dakota, but one was missing: Cavalier Air Force Station.\u00a0 I&#8217;d actually had one opportunity to visit, four years ago, then one of my kids took a tumble and had to go in for a possible concussion.\u00a0 I was twenty miles down the road when my wife called, and I had to do an abrupt u-turn and abort the trip.\u00a0 No such interruption this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/cavalier_PAR_38284-6_hdr-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5087\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/cavalier_PAR_38284-6_hdr-1-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"cavalier_PAR_38284-6_hdr\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/cavalier_PAR_38284-6_hdr-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/cavalier_PAR_38284-6_hdr-1-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/cavalier_PAR_38284-6_hdr-1-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>Cavalier AFS had an open house with a bunch of cool stuff and activities, but I didn&#8217;t take many photos of that.\u00a0 I arrived later than I&#8217;d hoped but with plenty of time to look around.\u00a0 The point of the trip:\u00a0 tour the building above.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an enormous Phased Array Radar (PAR), the most powerful space radar in the nation&#8217;s arsenal and capable of spotting a softball or smaller object (depending on who you ask) coming over the North Pole.<\/p>\n<p>No electronics are allowed in the building, so naturally photography was out of the question.\u00a0 In fact, that&#8217;s kind of the point.\u00a0 I had lots of egghead questions for the various people who presented on what they do, and it was absolute geek heaven.\u00a0 Everything I&#8217;d hoped it would be.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/nekoma_38333-5_hdr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5086\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/nekoma_38333-5_hdr-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"nekoma_38333-5_hdr\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/nekoma_38333-5_hdr.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/nekoma_38333-5_hdr-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/06\/nekoma_38333-5_hdr-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>Of course I had to stop in by the giant pyramid in Nekoma, part of a decommissioned system that worked with the PAR during its original configuration to launch and guide nuclear-tipped missiles to intercept ICBMs inbound from the north.<\/p>\n<p>There is so much fascinating history about these two sites that my head starts spinning when I begin to think about regurgitating what I&#8217;ve learned about them. Instead I think I&#8217;ll simply but emphatically suggest that you do your own research.\u00a0 They are very fascinating places, and the Cavalier Air Force Station site still performs extremely valuable service to our nation.<\/p>\n<p>This should get you started: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.srmsc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.srmsc.org<\/a>.
