I present to you: Frankenrig"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_truck_37216-8_HDR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5010\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_truck_37216-8_HDR-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"arena_truck_37216-8_HDR\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_truck_37216-8_HDR.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_truck_37216-8_HDR-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/04\/arena_truck_37216-8_HDR-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;ve alluded recently on social media that I was working on a little rig to help me with the type of photography I do.\u00a0 Case in point: the photo above.\u00a0 The sun was setting to the right of this photo, leaving the rest of the car in the dark.\u00a0 I wanted to fill with light rather than try to Photoshop it later, but that takes a <strong>lot<\/strong> of light.\u00a0 After trudging back to the van twice for more lights and stands, I figured there had to be a better way to get multiple flash units in one place.\u00a0 That was the inspiration for Frankenrig.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40696.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5167\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40696-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"frankenrig_40696\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40696.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40696-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40696-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;ll admit: it doesn&#8217;t look like much.\u00a0 It&#8217;s more an assembly of parts bought online with only one piece of my own handiwork.\u00a0 I messed with different lengths of 1\/4&#8243; thick aluminum until I found the right one, cut it, drilled it, tapped threads into it, and attached the various things I needed in order to hang three flashes from one lightweight portable stand.\u00a0 Once I found the right length, it was off to the powder coater to get a durable finish applied.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40700.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5166\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40700-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"frankenrig_40700\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40700.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40700-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40700-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>To each of those pegs I attached a pivoting light bracket.\u00a0 Each bracket can swivel on its post, while each bracket can articulate back and forth.\u00a0 Why use such tall pegs, you ask?\u00a0 Because I want to be able to operate the knurled knobs on the bottom of the pivoting brackets, even with winter gloves on, so I need the clearance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40711.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5165\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40711-333x500.jpg\" alt=\"frankenrig_40711\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40711.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40711-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40711-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a>In each pivoting bracket I attached a cold shoe so I could easily slide a Speedlite on and off.\u00a0 I have spare pegs in case I want to use a studio strobe, but that&#8217;s not why I built Frankenrig.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40703.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5164\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40703-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"frankenrig_40703\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40703.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40703-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40703-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>Here are the three radio controlled Speedlites attached.\u00a0 I tried different lengths of aluminum because I wanted Frankenrig to be as compact as possible, yet allow enough room between brackets to allow manipulation with winter gloves on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40704.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40704-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"frankenrig_40704\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40704.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40704-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bismarckmandanblog.com\/images\/2016\/07\/frankenrig_40704-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s a very flexible rig.\u00a0 The posts allow a number of things to be hung on this bracket in a variety of ways.\u00a0 Each flash, in addition to its own pivoting head, can pivot by rotating the cold shoe&#8217;s peg in its bracket.\u00a0 The bracket can pivot using its hinge, and it can swivel on its peg.\u00a0 The 1\/4&#8243; x 1&#8243; aluminum isn&#8217;t going to bend and everything is clinging together with 3\/8&#8243; threads and Loctite, so it&#8217;ll handle anything I opt to hang on it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So here I have a compact little rig which attaches to any universal light stand, including the lightweight ones I use for my type of photo trips.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a simple device, but allows me to bring a lot of light to a location with very little work.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a pretty specific tool, though; it&#8217;s most suitable for my type of photo trip.\u00a0 I want something lightweight and portable, not studio strobes.\u00a0 I need to be able to set up in uneven terrain, so the stands I have do that.\u00a0 I need to be able to adjust it, even in the cold with thick gloves on.\u00a0 And I want it to be overbuilt in the strength department, because that&#8217;s how my dad taught me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I look forward to taking Frankenrig into the field and throwing a lot of light at something!\u00a0 Then I can sing its praises when I have cool, well-lit photos to share here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve alluded recently on social media that I was working on a little rig to help me with the type of photography I do.\u00a0 Case in point: the photo above.\u00a0 The sun was setting to the right of this photo, &hellip;
