Tea Party on the Capitol Mall


I was able, like hundreds of others, to attend the TEA Party on the capitol mall last night. There were a lot of enthusiastic folks in attendance, probably the equivalent of fifty to a hundred NDPC rallies. While I’ll fill in the gaps with photos and words when I have more time, I wanted to share some of my favorite signs with you:

Oddly, I don’t have a photo of the other sign that made my Top Five. It said succinctly: “Welcome to North Dakota, where you can get an abortion but you can’t buy bottle rockets.” That speaks volumes right there.

A tribute to our soldiers this Memorial Day


I put together a little video tribute for Memorial Day late last night. I was moved to do so by something President Obama said in his speech at the Arizona State University commencement this year:

“…we’ve become accustomed to the term ‘military superpower’… forgetting about the qualities that got us there. Not just the power of our weapons, but the discipline, and valor, and the code of conduct of our men and women in uniform.”

At first I was really bent at the way this radical leftist spoke. I interpreted his words as meaning that the military had forgotten those qualities! What an awful thing to say! However, in the spirit of letting my temper cool down before going at it, I took another listen and decided to give the President the benefit of the doubt.

I looked at his words in a different light. In this context I took it to mean that, among the other things he denigrated his own nation for, the American people have forgotten the qualities of our heroic military men and women. That’s still a slap in the face to America, albeit a somewhat less offensive one to our soldiers and their loved ones. And, I figured, something that’s quite far from the truth.

On this of all holidays, I reasoned, it was especially important to let the soldiers who see this website know that we have not forgotten them. We have not forgotten their character. We have not forgotten their loyalty to their nation and their mission. We have not forgotten that their families and loved ones sacrifice by their side, saying goodbye to Mommy or Daddy, spouse, child, or friend for months at a time as they serve in harm’s way. How dare you, Mr. President, even insinuate such a thing?

I stand by my interpretation of the President’s words. I tried to read the actual text by Googling it online, which was interesting – the version on the Huffington Post stripped this part out! Perhaps they’re afraid of others making the same interpretation as I initially did. In any case, like I said, I’ll give the President the benefit of the doubt…and that ain’t pretty, either.

Like millions of Americans, I pray for our soldiers. I’m ever aware of the fact that somebody, somewhere is putting their life on the line for my freedom and the safety of my family. I’m also aware that somebody who loves that soldier is without them right now as they serve. It’s a humbling thought, and it’s one that provokes instant anger at the thought that anyone thinks we’ve forgotten them. On that note, here’s the meager tribute I assembled:

Please give no weight to the words of the President (or his teleprompter, it’s hard to know who decides what escapes the President’s lips) or people like him whose goal is to deride this nation and remake it in their own twisted image. The people who hold America and its core values dear are mindful of your commitment and thankful on this day and every day.

Socialized medicine drones working local phones…and some truths about “free health care”

This weekend I got a call from an activist pushing “health care reform” from phone number 701-255-2346. A few minutes of backtracking told me that it’s a personal residential number as well as the owner’s name and address, but I’m not going to post that information. In any case, the call went something like this:

Activist:
Some nonsensical blather about compassionate health care, complete with skewed ‘statistics’, then: “What do you think about health care in America?”

Me: I think that the people who claim they want “national health care” or “socialized medicine” or “health care for everyone” don’t want socialized medicine. They don’t want nationalized medicine. They want what we have RIGHT NOW, except they want it for free. And that’s not what they’re going to get if the government is put in charge of it!

Activist:
Oh, so you think that people who don’t have health care are lazy?

Me: No.

Activist: You don’t?

Me:
No. But you accuse me of making assumptions of people, but you are the one making assumptions about me.

Activist: So what do you think?

Me: I think I’m on a cell phone, I don’t know how you got this number, and I don’t want to waste my air time arguing with you. Have a nice day.

It’s always instructive to watch liberals engage in exactly the kind of behavior they attribute to, well, anyone who doesn’t agree with them. Here’s a guy who accuses me of stereotyping “poor people” (when that’s not the sole demographic of America’s uninsured) while blatantly stereotyping me. Simply because I don’t want government health care.

Then there’s the example of the rocket scientist whose window appears in the photo above. I drove past this house this weekend, saw an old couple in the yard, and saw the signs in the window. The two cars outside were smeared with all sorts of bumper stickers for Obama and state & local Democrat candidates. The sign in the window wants “Health Care for America NOW!” but I doubt the old codger has taken even an instant to think of what that means for him.

Look at these nations with “free” socialized/nationalized medicine such as Canada and the UK. They’re rationing care based on “merit”. Who decides the merit? The government, not the patient. That means people who engage in certain behaviors, have certain medical conditions, or are elderly have a good chance of being sent home from the clinic or hospital so someone more likely to have a better outcome can receive medical resources instead.

From the look of the guy who put these signs in his window, he’s past the prime age for any sort of nationalized health care. But obviously a habitual Democrat voter, despite their inability to make good on any promise they’ve made to any of the victim groups to which they pander every election cycle, he’s been brainwashed into toeing the party line. Right now the party line is government interference in health care, and he’s sold on it. The sad truth is, should it be implemented, he’s going to me among the first to be denied care when resources are short.

I knew a guy who went to a hospital in Canada. By the time the months went by and they decided to maybe treat his brain tumor, he was dead. I’ve heard Canadians implore the USA not to enact government health care because, “where will we Canadians go to get treated?” They also pass along their thanks, because we spend all the money to develop new medications, and then they get them for free while we bear the burden!

yes, that’s right: health care and medication costs fund research and development. We pay more for our medicine here because medicine is expensive to invent. Those costs must be recovered. Canada, however, has put into effect price controls on those medicines due to their national health care system. That means the USA must pay more for the same medicines; after all, the drug companies have to pay their bills.

If prices are “controlled” here in the USA, you can expect the research and develpment to STOP. It happened several years ago with the flu vaccine: the Clinton administration forced the prices down so low that companies quit making the vaccine! Then, when there was a breakout of the flu, there were no vaccines. They had to be imported, and there was a shortage. Expect a lot more of that.

Like I told that guy on the phone, people don’t want government health care. Even those who say they do actually want today’s health care system, with its innovation, convenience, and technology…but they want “the government” to provide it. That ain’t gonna happen.

Regardless of whatever sort of term you want to apply to it, government-run health care is a horrible idea. If people such as the guy calling from his home phone or the fella with his sticker collection and signs in his window would realize what’s going to happen… heck, what has happened when socialized medicine has been enacted, they’d change their minds. We don’t need to follow Canada’s or Europe’s horrible example.

Six biblical steps to an Obamanation


Many are alarmed with the speed and blindness with which our nation is veering toward a leftist, socialist predicament at the hand of President Obama and his willing accomplices in the Congress. It’s nothing new, folks. It’s actually (like everything else the left has been trying for forty years) a page out of a very old playbook. I refer you to Genesis chapter 47, where we can walk through the process step by step in the situation with ancient Egypt:

And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine. And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house. (Genesis 47:13-14)

As Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel put it, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.” While we don’t have a literal famine going on right now, we do have something similar in our financial crisis. Our reliance on our prosperity for our happiness puts us in a very vulnerable position. Proverbs 13:8 tells us that “the ransom of a man’s life are his riches…” and once our comfortable lifestyle is threatened, many panic and can be easily controlled by a government promising a solution.

And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? for the money faileth. And Joseph said, Give your cattle; and I will give you for your cattle, if money fail. And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year. (Genesis 47:15-17)

The citizens came to the government and willingly gave their property (and their freedom with it) for some security from the government. The money failed…does that sound remotely familiar? Sure, there’s a spiritual back story to God’s provision through Joseph, but as he is acting on behalf of the world system portrayed by Egypt in the Bible he takes over the nation progessively by “taking care of” the people in exchange for all that they have.

When that year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him, We will not hide it from my lord, how that our money is spent; my lord also hath our herds of cattle; there is not ought left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands: Wherefore shall we die before thine eyes, both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh: and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, that the land be not desolate. And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine prevailed over them: so the land became Pharaoh’s. (Genesis 47:18-20)

The insidious nature of government expansion is that it never quits unless we stop it. All that’s needed for a takeover is a willing populace, whether asleep at the wheel or simply scared into submission. The people, having been frightened into relying on the government to provide for them, sold their possessions, their land, and themselves to the government in the span of two years. All they needed was a little crisis to shake them up, and as long as they weren’t relying on God they would gladly give everything to whoever else they thought could provide. Then, before they knew it, they were slaves.

And as for the people, he removed them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt even to the other end thereof. Only the land of the priests bought he not; for the priests had a portion assigned them of Pharaoh, and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them: wherefore they sold not their lands. (Genesis 47:21-22)

While ideologies like socialism, communism, and the like promise “equality,” they deny the undeniable human spirit, the desire to achieve. Therefore, these types of government require one class for all the “little people” and one class to enforce the “equality.” Left alone, people all want to better themselves to a degree…some more than others. That doesn’t work in a self-proclaimed “egalitarian” society unless you have a class of enforcers above all of those deemed “equal.”

Notice how the rest were moved into cities. Remember how cities like Bismarck, Fargo, and others are submitting (without voter approval, mind you) to “smart growth” schemes, denying property rights, asserting extra-territorial zoning authority, and pushing mass transit? Individual property rights are merely a nuisance to government; if we let them continue on this path, we slowly (albeit more quickly these days) give up our liberty. The founders or our nation realized that individual property rights are a huge component of personal liberty.

Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land. And it shall come to pass in the increase, that ye shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones. (Genesis 47:23-24)

There you have it, folks. Nothing granted by government comes without strings attached, and good luck getting rid of those strings. Just ask the banks that didn’t want TARP money, took it at the insistence of the government, are now finding themselves run by the government, and find that the government will not accept the bailout money back when they try to repay it! The automakers are another case in point. Once you accept the government’s provision, you’re Owned. That’s with a capital Obama O. Once you’ve accepted the “generosity” of the government, then the list of demands start rolling in. These people sought help from the state, and before they knew it they were working for the state.

And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants. (Genesis 47:25)

Here’s the real sad part: the people were so deceived that they counted themselves as having been saved by the government. There is no salvation in government, folks. The problem today is the same; people aren’t relying on God, their own individuality, or the wisdom of the founding fathers in drafting the foundation of our country. In fact, most people are too ignorant to the intentions of the founders of the United States of America to even realize how far we’ve come. John Adams said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” That falls right in line with the old phrase, “If you don’t believe in God, you’ll believe in anything.” That’s what happened to the people of Egypt thousands of years ago, and it seems we’re in the process of falling for it again, having departed so far from the faith and values upon which our nation was founded.

There you have it folks. I was considering a post like this a while back, then I heard a preacher talk about something similar recently and decided to put my thoughts into writing. Another time-tested cliche’ talks about those who are ignorant of history being condemned to repeat it. Sadly, I think that today’s under-educated, entertainment-driven American masses have departed so far from the ideals of the original United States of America that they were primed for a cult of personality to come along and sweep them into collectivism. My hope and prayer is that there are still enough of us left, the vigilant and faithful, who believe in this nation as it was conceived and founded over two hundred years ago. If we can steer this ship aright, we can avoid becoming an Obamanation.

Earl Pomeroy: dishonest then, dishonest now, or both?


Earl “the Pearl” Pomeroy decided grandstanding would be good once again, vehemently shouting that the people have said, “hell no, and give us our money back!” in response to the bonuses given to AIG employees, bonuses which were contractually owed to those employees. Like many of this nation’s worthless congressmen, he acts as though he’s an innocent bystander in this whole mess, yet Congress is the body responsible. You can see the video of this hypocritcal grandstanding below:

But it gets better: Pomeroy told KX News that he’d read the stimulus bill cover to cover. If that’s so, then how did he miss the fact that Kent Conrad’s co-conspirator put an amendment into the bill to protect these bonuses?

So…when was Pomeroy more dishonest: when he said he’d read the stimulus bill, or when he summoned up his burst of outrage on the floor of the House to put on a show for the folks back home?

Fight the insidious homosexual agenda’s advance in North Dakota

Yesterday I was unable to attend a committee hearing on Senate Bill 2278 (PDF), which seeks to add “sexual orientation” to the state’s anti-discrimination laws. It’s a sneaky “foot in the door” for the homosexual agenda, one which has to be stopped.

I would gladly have given testimony at the Judiciary Committee hearing yesterday, but couldn’t make it. I have, however, sent emails to my legislators. I urge you to do the same. It wouldn’t hurt to follow up with a phone call. The text of my email is below, and you can feel free to cut/paste relevant portions of it for your own email.

I’m a constituent of District 30, and unfortunately was unable to attend the judicial committee meeting on SB 2278 this week. This is the bill to amend state law regarding discrimination by adding the term “sexual orientation”. I’m writing to voice my strong opposition to this bill. I have tried to find information on the status of this bill, but have been unable to do so. If it continues to the floor for a vote, I must urge you to vote NO on this bill, and to urge your fellow Representatives to do so as well.

Like those who founded our country, I’m a Christian. Because I believe the Bible, I believe that homosexuality and its variants are wrong. It’s my Constitutionally protected right to think so, and to exercise my beliefs freely. The people behind SB 2278 don’t agree with that; in fact, they want to legitimize their sinful act at the expense of the religious freedoms of others.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those wacky Westboro types that pickets funerals and the like. I actually joined the Patriot Guard to oppose those people. But I don’t appreciate having someone try to ram their sexual agenda down the throats of North Dakotans. I believe that homosexuality is an abomination according to the Bible, but so is ALL sin. That includes theft, adultery, lying, etc. Just because the physical manifestation of homosexuality is more offensive than the others doesn’t mean we’re singling it out. By the same token, we don’t have “thieves advocacy groups” pushing legislation trying to legitimize their sin, do we? There aren’t any “Liars’ Pride” parades that I know of. But there is a very strong pro-homosexual lobby; they seek to be legitimized by passing legislation guaranteeing that they get special status above other citizens, and that’s wrong.

One reason why legislation like this has been labeled “insidious” by legislators in other states such as Indiana which are evaluating “hate crimes” legislation is the “aid ,abet, or induce” part of it. If “sexual orientation” is added to this law, and a pastor preaches out of the Bible that homosexuality is wrong, these groups intend for the pastor to be prosecuted for any perceived “hate cimes” or “discrimination” against homosexuals by anyone who heard his sermon. They are not really interested in equal rights; their goal is to silence all opposition to their sin. They know that it is frowned upon by most Americans, so they wish to legislate the opposition into silence by fear of prosecution.

Case in point: my wife and I own a duplex. For years we have rented the other half of it to help make our house payment. We’ve rented to friends or acquaintances the whole time. If I wanted to list it as an available rental property, but declined to rent it to a homosexual couple because I don’t want this sin entering my home, the proponents of this bill would have me face legal penalty. My religious objections, guaranteed by the Free Exercise clause of the 1st Amendment as well as the section of ND state law that SB 2278 attempts to amend, would be irrelevant if these people had their way. I am not seeking legislation to hang Bible verses on the wall in their house; yet they are seeking the force of government to force me to allow their sin into mine.

People who chose homosexuality deserve no more protection under the law than the rest of us. They don’t want “equality” per se; if that was the case, they would not be trying to use the force of law to trump my freedom of religion. I believe that seemingly innocuous legislation like SB 2278 is the beginning of a slippery slope where the “rights” of people with deviant sexual practices take priority over the Constitutional freedoms guaranteed to all Americans. That’s the hidden agenda behind SB 2278, and the reason why I believe it deserves a resounding defeat.

We have a form of government that only works if the people get involved in it. Our opposition has no problem getting their activists going; we need to do the same. Sorry, Martin Luther King Jr.: you failed. It is with great regret that I note, on the day marking the remembrance of your life and accomplishments, that we’re about to inaugurate the antithesis of that famous speech back in August of 1963:

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Had Barack Obama been judged by his character, he wouldn’t have made it out of Chicago. Well, the cult of personality, propped up by the house organ media, actually got this fella elected. Now we’re all going to have to deal with the result. This isn’t sour grapes, folks: this guy’s policies, and the agendas of the people who have surrounded him his entire life, spell the end of the United States of America if allowed to come to fruition.

Here’s your “change” by the way: an administration full of recycled Clinton administration hacks, many of whom are already caught up in scandal; avowed socialists, communists, terrorists, and other anti-American associates; and a President who has done nothing but run for office for the past few years. Well, he’s won it. Now what? Gun control, abortion, and the term “hate speech” to label anyone audacious enough to point out that homosexuality is wrong. That’s without even getting to the fiscal part of things!

Well, here comes all that Hope™ and Change™ that the vacuous masses of Obama voters wanted, despite the fact that few of them could summon a tangible idea of the policies embodied by those two buzz words. Who knows, maybe they’ll be too enthralled by American Idol to even notice the path down which an Obama presidency takes us.

My hope and prayer for President Obama is that he never gets anywhere near his socialist goals. I pray that once the real world sets in on Wednesday, and he actually has to commit to a policy decision, that he finds himself unable to go down the path he’s espoused throughout his short political career. I pray he’s able to keep our nation safe, and I certainly wish him no ill will, but I hope his policies die on the drawing board. With the help he’ll receive from the Legislative branch and the bedazzled mainstream media, however, I am have my doubts.

Do you like being able to select a doctor from among the finest in the nation, and not wait for months to see them? Well, here comes the change. Do you believe in the sanctity of life, even in the womb? Well, here comes the change. Do you believe in the right to own a gun to protect yourself and your family? Well, here comes the change. Do you strive to better yourself without having a union telling you what to do? Well, here comes the change. Do you believe in the right to speak freely about what the Bible says? Well, here comes the change. And do you enjoy the right to be able to cry out with the voice of political dissent? Well, here comes the change.

The Bible says we’re to abide by the government under which we live, and I certainly plan to do that. I also plan to continue to be involved in political matters, and implore everyone else to do so as well. As far as the Bible verse I would best love to apply (albeit out of context) to an Obama presidency, I suppose it would be Psalms 109, verse 8:

Let his days be few; and let another take his office.

Of course it’s only the days of his Presidency that I would like to be few, not “his days” of course. Be that as it may, we’ve got at least four years of trying to hang onto the freedoms we have left. Let’s stand up for what we believe in. In the mean time, have a sip of that crazy Kool-Aid and hang on. Hopey Changemas, everybody!

UPDATE: I’m fully prepared to be called a “racist” for disagreeing with President Obama, as they started that little game during the campaign. They sure set the tone early, however, as evidenced by the benediction “prayer” by Rev. Joseph Lowery: “Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around… when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen. Say Amen…”

In other words, if you’re white, you’re a bigot. Hope! Change!

Obama deflection campaign sets its sights on North Dakota, land of corruption

By now you’ve heard of the latest wildfire of indignation to hit North Dakota since that pinhead from National Geographic had the nerve to besmirch the name of our beloved state: this USA Today article calling North Dakota the most corrupt state in the nation.

Well, we do have Byron “Skybox” Dorgan who was embroiled in the Jack Abramoff scandal a while back. The media played that as a Republican scandal, but Dorgan (who’s on the Indian Affairs committee) was seen in Abramoff’s skybox at the MCI Center four years before he claimed in a press release that he’d “never met” the man. Next thing you know, he’s returning the money he never got from the man he never met…no worries. The lapdog ND media gave him a pass.

Now we have Senator Kent “Countrywide” Conrad, who is under investigation for getting a sweetheart mortgage deal on property in Bismarck. He too claims he had no idea what was going on, but an NBC News special report interviewed the guy whose job it was to MAKE these politicians know that they got special treatment. I actually lived in the 8-plex he got a loan for; Countrywide’s policy is to loan on no larger than a 4-plex.

Conrad owns this apartment complex near the capitol and claims it as his legal address so he can continue to live on the east coast complements of ND citizens. Even better: he provides another apartment in this complex to Senator Dorgan! I never saw either of them at this apartment building when I lived there, leading me to conclude that they keep those addresses on paper only so they can continue to run for reelection as North Dakotans. Oh, and Conrad gave some money to Habitat for Humanity as penance for his unwitting cronyism, and the KFYR’s and Bismarck Tribune’s of the state sucked it up like always.

These two alone have enough corruption for the entire state. As far as the USA Today report goes, we in ND have fewer people than other states, but plenty of government. The ratio is tipped. Besides, we prosecute our criminals (except for Conrad and Dorgan, we send them to Washington) when they abuse their public office. This whole thing is irrelevant, though; it’s just a ploy to deflect attention from Illinois, the state of the Obamessiah, who the media helped elect and will continue to shield as long as he’s able to hold office.

It’s time! Actually, it’s been time for a while, since early voting centers have been open. I voted last week, for example. You can scroll down a little bit if you want to hear what a goofball like me thinks about the measures and the Presidential candidates.

One thought crossed my mind, though. If you wouldn’t mind indulging me in a little experiment, please write me in for Burleigh County Commission. It would be interesting to see if we could make a statistical showing.

If you don’t know when to vote, please visit the North Dakota Secretary of State’s Office at www.nd.gov/sos to find your polling location. You may even get a sample ballot in PDF format that you can print and use to practice. You can weigh your choices, fill out the sample ballot, and take it with you. Nobody can cast your vote for you, but you can use the sample ballot to help remember the choices you wish to make. It’s not like you’re taking the SAT in there; you can bring notes or a completed sample ballot in to assist you. Make your choices on the sample ballot, take it with you to the poll, and copy your well-considered choices to the actual ballot. That’s perfectly legal and a good idea if you have a shaky memory.

I know the media has carried Barack Obama through this election, and they may well push him over the top; but with the worship he’s been given by all the mainstream newspapers, broadcast news outlets, and cable news stations, he should be up by thirty points in the polls. The fact that he isn’t gives me a little bit of optimism. The fact that ACORN has managed hundreds of thousands of fraudulent voter registrations is worrisome, however. We’ll let it all shake out and see what happens.

Even if the Obamessiah lost in a landslide, you know there would be weeks of caterwauling about voter fraud. If he wins, we’re in for a bumpy ride; however, if he and his ilk take the country where they want to, the backlash could seal their party’s fate for decades. Now is not the time to worry; it’s the time to call all your friends who don’t want to be socialists, rally ’em up, and get them out to vote. Regardless of the result, we’re going to have a big mess to sort out come Wednesday morning. The difference between the two candidates will be the nature of the hangover.

I’m going to be too busy Tuesday to pay much attention to the coverage until evening. To torture one’s self with a constant barrage of news all day isn’t worthwhile anyway. See y’all tomorrow night, then.
