Windmill week

It’s been a minute, hasn’t it? I’m trying to get back into the swing of things, and what better way to attempt such a feat than to go with something I know – and, I think, I’m pretty good at: windmill photos. I’ve got a few new/recent ones, so let’s have at it. One day at a time.

Gaol

I was doing some drone work north of Bismarck-Mandan and found myself heading past Regan as the sun began to set. Naturally I popped in for a visit to the old jail, since I’ve always found this little building interesting. Besides, this is the best lighting condition I think I’ve ever had for a brief photo visit!

Roadside attraction, part trois

Okay, technically this cabin is next to a road, but not in the same way as the previous pair I’ve posted recently.

I grew up in the mountains, and if I had the means I’d get back there much more often than I do. Every day in the mountains is special, especially when a surprise like this presents itself!

My friend and I were hunting for a picnic spot next to a stream which carved its way through some huge, towering, rocky cliffs. We ventured upstream a ways to see if we could find a way to descend to the water, and we found one. We wound down it to the perfect picnic spot, wandered around among the rocks and burbling water, and marked it in the GPS for future visits.

On our way back, I stopped to snap this shot of an object which had caught my eye on the way down while we were preoccupied with finding our way. It didn’t disappoint. This is one of my favorite photos of the day! I can’t wait to go back someday…

Roadside attraction

As with most of my hundreds of thousands of photos, I can tell you exactly where I was when this was taken. In order to prove it to myself, I called up The Google and found it on Maps in around ten seconds. It’s northwest of Watford City just a little ways. I was up there for a Cross Country tournament, and then I went roaming after the main event. I got some great photos along the way, too.

I didn’t even have to get out of the truck for this one: I just pointed my camera out of the window and got it. I was on a mission to a spot I’d targeted in advance, as I typically do on these trips, so I didn’t waste any time capturing this old house and moving on.

It’s 2025. (updated)

I admit that when I posted this two weeks ago, I really didn’t care much that it was 2025. It wasn’t a particularly great holiday season for our family, and it was too short to boot, so…yay.

But we’re all better now, back better than ever, so I suppose it’s time to take a look at the backlog of photos I got in 2024 but haven’t posted. Soon.

Want to know something crazy? This is the 20th year of this photo blog. It’s been a wild ride, too. I’ve seen some things, done some things, been some places…incredible. Hopefully I can make this a banner year, because 1 January 2026 will be the twentieth anniversary of the ‘ol Blog, and maybe I can do a “best of” post including lots of amazing photos from 2025.
