I recently spotted this unfortunate windmill while heading up to Arena to check on the status of St. John’s Church (it’s still there.) and had to stop for a few photos. I don’t remember every finding one in this condition.

Continue readingThey won’t all be sunsets, but I felt it was nice to lead off with a pair of windmills at one of my favorite times of day. I hope it’s yours, too!
It’s been a minute, hasn’t it? I’m trying to get back into the swing of things, and what better way to attempt such a feat than to go with something I know – and, I think, I’m pretty good at: windmill photos. I’ve got a few new/recent ones, so let’s have at it. One day at a time.
I was doing some drone work north of Bismarck-Mandan and found myself heading past Regan as the sun began to set. Naturally I popped in for a visit to the old jail, since I’ve always found this little building interesting. Besides, this is the best lighting condition I think I’ve ever had for a brief photo visit!
This post on the end has been the subject of my photos for twenty years. It used to stand tall for plenty of Northern Lights viewing nights and that sort of thing. Then, time yanked the earth out from under it.
Continue readingI was poking around Lake Creek Falls in Wyoming last fall when I found an amazing artifact. Any guy can identify with the excitement I felt when I brought it back.
Continue readingOkay, technically this cabin is next to a road, but not in the same way as the previous pair I’ve posted recently.
I grew up in the mountains, and if I had the means I’d get back there much more often than I do. Every day in the mountains is special, especially when a surprise like this presents itself!
My friend and I were hunting for a picnic spot next to a stream which carved its way through some huge, towering, rocky cliffs. We ventured upstream a ways to see if we could find a way to descend to the water, and we found one. We wound down it to the perfect picnic spot, wandered around among the rocks and burbling water, and marked it in the GPS for future visits.
On our way back, I stopped to snap this shot of an object which had caught my eye on the way down while we were preoccupied with finding our way. It didn’t disappoint. This is one of my favorite photos of the day! I can’t wait to go back someday…
I saw this footer on the front page of the February 18th issue of the BismarCk Tribune. This is a little embarassing…omitting the “c” in Bismarck? It’s literally in the name of the newspaper, after all. But ya gotta cut ’em a little slack, I suppose…
Continue readingOn a photo jaunt last autumn, I came across this beautiful old home while on my way to a targeted photo location. I love finding surprises like this along the back roads of rural North Dakota, and this particular trip was especially fruitful.
Continue readingAs with most of my hundreds of thousands of photos, I can tell you exactly where I was when this was taken. In order to prove it to myself, I called up The Google and found it on Maps in around ten seconds. It’s northwest of Watford City just a little ways. I was up there for a Cross Country tournament, and then I went roaming after the main event. I got some great photos along the way, too.
I didn’t even have to get out of the truck for this one: I just pointed my camera out of the window and got it. I was on a mission to a spot I’d targeted in advance, as I typically do on these trips, so I didn’t waste any time capturing this old house and moving on.
